Commissioned by the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik and completed in 691 CE, the Dome of the Rock stands over the rock from which the Prophet Muhammad ascended during the Night Journey. Its mosaics and Quranic inscriptions were architectural arguments about the place of Islam in the sacred history of Jerusalem. It has stood for thirteen centuries.
