This artwork shows Ibn Khaldun in the act of writing. Absorbed, solitary, the Muqaddimah taking shape under his hand during a period of retreat from the courts and conflicts he had spent his life navigating.
The Muqaddimah, written in 1377, was unlike anything that had come before it. Ibn Khaldun did not simply record history. He tried to explain it, to identify the forces that built civilisations and the forces that destroyed them. He introduced the concept of asabiyyah: the social solidarity that binds groups, drives conquest, and eventually erodes under the weight of comfort and excess. He analysed taxation, labour, education, and the psychology of power with a rigour that modern sociologists still recognise.
He anticipated disciplines that wouldn't be named for centuries. He did it in a single introduction to a history of the world.
