Mughal wall art print of the golden Chain of Justice Jahangir hung from the wall of his palace at Agra, sixty bells running down to a post by the river, waiting for any subject who had been wronged to pull it. Painted in soft watercolour with fine ink detail, the fort and river fading into white space at the edges. An elegant, symbolic piece for a law office, study, chambers or hallway.
Jahangir instituted the chain in 1605. Anyone wronged by a governor, an official or a judge could ring it and the emperor was obliged to hear the complaint in person. Whether every case was heard equally is debated. That the mechanism existed and was used is documented. The chain said: the palace has an open door.
