Fatima al-Samarqandi was a twelfth-century jurist trained by her father, the renowned Hanafi scholar Ala al-Din al-Samarqandi. She co-authored legal opinions with him. She married another leading jurist, al-Kasani, on the condition that he dedicate his major work to her father, a negotiation that says something about the weight she carried. She issued fatwas independently. Rulers consulted her. Students came to learn from her.
She operated at the centre of Islamic legal scholarship at a time when that scholarship shaped governance, commerce, family law, and public life across a vast part of the world. Her authority was not marginal. It was formal, documented, and respected.
