This artwork depicts Rabia al-Adawiyya in motion. Arms raised, garments flowing, the body expressing what words can only approach.
Rabia al-Adawiyya was an eighth-century mystic from Basra whose conception of divine love shaped the entire subsequent tradition of Islamic spirituality. She was the first to articulate the idea of loving God not out of fear of hellfire or hope of paradise, but purely for God's own sake. That shift, from transactional to unconditional love as the foundation of spiritual life, was radical. It became central.
She was enslaved, freed, and spent the rest of her life in poverty she chose not to escape. Scholars, jurists, and rulers sought her out. She turned most of them away. The tradition she helped found produced Rumi, Ibn Arabi, and a thousand years of Sufi poetry and practice.
