This artwork shows Zubayda bint Ja'far overlooking the desert. The Hajj road stretching into the distance, the infrastructure she funded visible in the wells and rest stops that made the journey survivable.
Zubayda was the wife of Caliph Harun al-Rashid and one of the most significant patrons of public works in Abbasid history. She commissioned a road from Baghdad to Mecca, the Darb Zubayda, complete with wells dug at regular intervals, reservoirs, rest houses, and milestones. The project took decades and cost a fortune she spent deliberately. Pilgrims used the road for centuries. Parts of it are still visible today.
She also funded the construction of water channels in Mecca itself when the city faced severe shortages. Her name is attached to infrastructure that served millions of people across hundreds of years. That is what serious patronage looks like.
