In this artwork, a distinguished figure stands observing a vast desert landscape where travellers move along a route sustained by wells, canals, and reservoirs. The scene reflects one of the most remarkable acts of patronage in the early Abbasid era, associated with Zubayda bint Ja‘far, a woman whose vision and generosity transformed the pilgrimage routes of the Islamic world.

Zubayda was a prominent member of the Abbasid dynasty and the wife of the famed caliph Harun al-Rashid. Living during the late eighth and early ninth centuries, she became widely respected not only for her position within the imperial court but also for her extraordinary commitment to public welfare. At a time when the journey to Mecca for pilgrimage required crossing vast and unforgiving deserts, she recognised the immense hardship faced by travellers who lacked reliable access to water along the route.

In response, Zubayda funded an ambitious infrastructure project that would permanently reshape the pilgrimage experience. Engineers and labourers constructed a vast network of wells, canals, dams, and reservoirs stretching across the desert between Iraq and the holy cities of the Hijaz. This remarkable system became known as the Zubayda Canal, and parts of it continued to serve pilgrims for centuries.

The scale of the project was extraordinary. Water channels were carved through rocky terrain, reservoirs were built to collect seasonal rainfall, and wells were reinforced to ensure travellers could access fresh water during their journey. These improvements transformed what had once been a dangerous and exhausting route into a far safer path for pilgrims travelling to perform one of the most important acts of worship in Islam.

The desert landscape depicted in the artwork symbolises both the challenge and the triumph of this endeavour. Where travellers once faced harsh conditions and uncertainty, a network of life-sustaining water sources now supported their journey. Zubayda’s patronage demonstrated how vision and generosity could transform not only infrastructure but also the lived experiences of thousands of people making the pilgrimage each year.

Displaying this artwork honours the legacy of a woman whose generosity left a lasting mark on Islamic history. It serves as a reminder that acts of patronage, when guided by compassion and foresight, can shape the lives of generations and support communities long after their creators have passed.
