This artwork depicts an Ottoman official within the sacred precinct of Jerusalem's Haram al-Sharif, overseeing restoration work on structures that the empire had committed to maintain.
The Ottoman sultans, particularly Suleiman I, invested significantly in the preservation and restoration of Jerusalem's holy sites. Suleiman rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem, restored the Dome of the Rock's tilework, and established the administrative and financial infrastructure to maintain the city's monuments in perpetuity through the waqf system.
An endowment is a different kind of power than a conquest. It says: we intend to still be here. We are making legal and financial arrangements to ensure that this place is cared for after we are gone. This print is about that kind of commitment. The long-term kind, the kind that requires institutions rather than just intentions.
