This artwork depicts Zaynab bint al-Kamal in a quiet scholarly space. Arches framing her, a lattice screen filtering the light, the atmosphere of a woman who taught at the heart of medieval Islamic learning.
Zaynab bint al-Kamal was one of the most prolific hadith scholars of fourteenth-century Damascus. She held the highest certification, ijaza, from over four hundred teachers, an extraordinary number even by the standards of a tradition that prized chains of transmission above almost everything else. Students travelled from across the Islamic world to study with her. She taught in mosques. She issued certificates to male scholars who then taught others in her name.
Her influence ran through generations of scholarship. She was not exceptional because she was a woman who taught. She was exceptional because almost no one, of any gender, taught as widely or as authoritatively as she did.
