This artwork depicts Tipu Sultan's final stand at Seringapatam in 1799. The ruler of Mysore who fought the British East India Company harder, longer, and with more strategic intelligence than almost any other ruler on the subcontinent.
Tipu Sultan modernised his army, forged alliances with France, introduced new rocket artillery technology that the British later adopted, and governed a state whose administrative sophistication impressed even hostile observers. He was defeated not by British superiority but by the betrayal of his own generals, bribed by the Company before the siege began.
He died in the breach, fighting. The British found his body under a pile of the dead. They had been trying to remove him for twenty years. It took treachery to do it. His legacy outlasted his enemies' efforts to bury it. The Mysore rocket technology he pioneered was studied by William Congreve and became the basis of British rocketry for the next century.
