This artwork portrays a garden of orange trees at the foot of a hill crowned by the Alhambra, reflecting the horticultural world that emerged in al Andalus during and after the influence of Ziryab. The scene captures one of his most significant and tangible contributions. Ziryab played a central role in introducing new citrus varieties to the Iberian Peninsula, including early forms of the bitter and sweet orange, along with refined methods of grafting, irrigation and seasonal cultivation. The orange orchards shown here represent a legacy that transformed the landscapes of Cordoba and Granada, where citrus groves, perfumed blossoms and structured garden layouts became defining features of Andalusi life.

Historically, Ziryab arrived in Cordoba in the ninth century, bringing with him knowledge from the Abbasid East that reshaped the cultural and horticultural practices of al Andalus. Medieval agronomic writers record that he helped establish new species of fruit trees, introduced asparagus and flowering plants, refined irrigation channels and encouraged orderly planting and fragrance layering within gardens. His improvements to grafting and cultivation made citrus trees more viable and productive, laying the foundations for the famous orange gardens that later became emblematic of Andalusi cities. The Alhambra, shown in the background, eventually inherited this horticultural tradition, becoming a palace complex surrounded by orchards, reflective pools, shaded courtyards and gardens organised according to principles that Ziryab helped popularise centuries earlier.

The artwork brings together the horticultural and cultural dimensions of Ziryab’s legacy. The orange trees symbolise a real botanical transformation that shaped the identity of southern Spain, from the fruit markets of Cordoba to the courtyards of Granada. The Alhambra stands as a reminder of the civilisation that grew from these foundations, a world in which artistry, refinement, scientific knowledge and environmental beauty were woven into daily life. Displayed in a modern interior, this piece becomes a tribute to the cultivation of both nature and culture, celebrating a figure whose influence can still be seen, tasted and breathed in the orchards of Andalusia today.

Every artwork in this collection is available in four thoughtfully selected display formats, designed to complement a wide range of interiors while maintaining a consistent standard of quality and finish.
